Summer Camps

Warm temperatures and no school make summer a great time to row. AJRA offers summer rowing camps for middle and high schoolers at various levels, from Learn-to-Row Camps for brand new rowers, Returning Rower camps for those with a basic foundation of rowing, and Technical Camps for returning high school rowers. Camps provide a great way for athletes to learn or develop rowing skills, within the structure of summer camp fun.

LEARN-TO-ROW CAMPS

This one-week camp is perfect for first time rowers! During each week campers learn about the sport, equipment, terminology, and safety of moving boats on and off the water. We begin with a basic workout program, and everyone has a chance to get out on the Chattahoochee River.

PREREQUISITES: No previous rowing experience is necessary. Camps are co-ed for students ages 12-18. Minimum age to participate is 12 years by first day of camp. Campers are grouped each session by age, size, and skill level. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable athletic wear and bring a water bottle.

RETURNING ROWER CAMP

This camp is for both rowers and coxswains and offers an advanced rowing experience with a heavy focus on the technical aspects of the rowing stroke. Rowers will be grouped by age and skill. The most advanced rowers will focus on small boat training, while the less experienced rowers will focus on the application of the rowing stroke.

PREREQUISITES: Returning D-Squad and Rec Team athletes or those with 2 weeks of Learn to Row camp. Questions about your eligibility? Email us.

COMPETITIVE RACING CAMP

This camp is open to athletes with at least one season of competitive racing, novice or varsity. Practices are 6 days a week: 7am - 12pm (with a 1 hour rest/refuel break from 9-10am) and run from late June through mid-July. Athletes will compete at USRowing Summer Nationals in Ann Arbor, Michigan. USRowing Summer Nationals is a highly competitive regatta and boats will be composed of athletes accordingly.

Rising Seniors who are interested in being recruited to college will participate in the Coaches Tent at Summer Nats. Meet college coaches, discuss rowing background (we will help the athlete create a rowing resume if need be) and see what opportunities there are for them to continue rowing in college.

TECHNICAL DROP-IN PRACTICES

Rowers with some prior competitive experience can enjoy a flexible practice schedule during the summer. Our open practices are for athletes who want to get back on the water and develop their technique and on-water fitness. Space is limited in all practices to enable a low coach-to-athlete ratio, an ongoing emphasis on sculling and boat skills, and a focus on safe distancing and instruction.

PREREQUISITES: Any returning rower or coxswain from Varsity or Novice squads. This camp is open to all high school-aged rowers, including spring seniors.

Practice Times: Drop-in practices will be held 7-8:45 am OR 9-10:45 am, beginning in early June and running through the summer until August 1. (We will add more daily sessions if needed.)

Price: $175 for 10 summer practice e-punchcard

Once registered for an e-punchcard, athletes will be added to an email list with access to a sign-up form for practices which will be accessible on Sunday midday for the upcoming week’s sessions. Rowers must sign up in advance for the sessions they want to attend each week.  Attend the practice times that work for you and your summer schedule!
